WP1 Regulation of food safety and environment
A major challenge for reuse of water in the food industry is to document that this is really possible without compromising food safety or food quality. WP1 will identify regulatory and non-regulatory issues at national level, at EU-level and in relation to selected 3rd countries that may form a constraint for the reuse of water. Based on input from the other work packages WP1 will initiate development of risk assessments of the related food safety aspects leading to best practises and lighthouse projects of new innovative approaches to reuse water. This work will facilitate and support the development of national guides for the reuse of water. The national guides will be assessed by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, integrated in the official control and thereby alter previous administrative practice of individual exemptions thus serving to facilitate and increase reuse of water in the food industry. The outcome will be used to promote the development of EU guides on reuse of water.
As major food industries must comply with future EU standards on Best Available Techniques (BREF standards). WP1 will support cooperation with the environmental authorities in this area. This work will contribute to the development of relevant EU BREF standards and EU standards on water reuse that will increase the water efficiency and water reuse in the European food sector.
Objectives for WP1
- To identify regulatory and “non-regulatory” challenges at the national and international levels on food safety and food quality and to support best practices and lighthouse projects by performing “ad hoc” risk assessments.
- To develop national guides on safe reuse of water and promoting the development of EU guides on reuse of water.
- To contribute to the development of EU BREF standards and EU standards on water reuse that will reduce water consumption and increase efficiency and water reuse in the European food sector.
